Beard Tips

For those who seek the mightiest of beards

So you're growing a beard... Now what?

Before we start, there's one main thing you need to remember which is that beard care is not beard care, it's skin care - The healthier the skin, the healthier the beard. if you look after your skin, it will look after you beard!

And despite what some companies may say, nothing will make your beard grow except for time and patience. As I said above, you need to look after your skin and beard to keep it healthy and while doing so won't make it grow, it will help you along the way.

Now then, let's get in to it!

Whether you have stubble or a mighty beard that even Odin himself would be proud of, you need to look after it. There's good news though my Viking friends, this is where beard products come in!
There are many different types of products you can use to keep your beard healthy but there's 3 you'll see most often - Oils, butters and balms. They are all leave-in conditioners that provide your hair and skin with the care and nutrients they need but each one works slightly differently in your beard.

There's a lot out there and I'm going to break it down so it's a bit easier to understand and I'll explain each one in more depth below. "So what do I need for my beard?" is the most common question I'm asked and my usual answer is this:

All 3 products are leave in conditioners that will provide your beard and skin with what they need. Oils are good moisturisers and mine provide a slight hold/help keep stray hairs a bit more manageable. Butters are great moisturisers and mine provide a good hold to your beard. My balms moisturise around the same level as oils do but provide a strong hold for your hair.

Oils and Butters should be used from the stubble stage all the way up to, and past, the mightiest of beards.

Balms, due to the hold, are best to be used once your beard starts growing past the chin, gets a bit bushy or you start having some untameable hairs.

Oils - For all beards
The go to product for anyone with a beard! Beard oils contain natural oils such as Sweet Almond and Castor, they are a great conditioner for your hair and skin that do a good job of keeping your beard moisturised. My Thick Oils step it up a notch by providing a slight hold to your beard to help tame any stray hairs and provide your hair and skin with longer lasting nourishment. Apply oil to your beard in the morning then again in the evening to keep everything moisturised.

Taking it a step further! Butters contain the same ingredients as oils but also add natural butters such as Mango and Kokum to deeply moisturise your beard and the skin beneath. Butters tend to stay in the beard longer than oils. My Heavy Butters have been designed to give a good styling hold, as well as being deeply moisturising, in order to keep your beard looking neat and tidy. Heavy Butter lasts longer in your beard than butters from any other brand and will keep your beard feeling great all day and all night! Apply once in the morning and you're set until the next morning!

For the staying power! Balms contain the same ingredients as butters but also include a wax, typically beeswax, to give a hold to your beard. They're not as moisturising as butters due to the wax but they allow you to style your beard better. Most companies will recommend combining an oil with a balm but that's a load of shit - simply a marketing strategy to get you to buy two products instead of one! Oils also help to breakdown the wax so by combining them, you're negating the effects of the balm. You don't have to worry about that with my Mighty Balms! Mighty Balm moisturises your skin about the same amount as an oil does and gives you the added benefit of a firm hold for the hair. Mighty Balms are made with Candelilla Wax which makes them one of the only vegan friendly balms you'll find. They provide a great hold that lasts throughout the day to make sure your beard is always looking its best! Apply once in the morning to hold and moisturise all day

Whichever you choose is down to your personal preference. If you're an avid user of balms you'll notice the wax builds up in your beard after a few days so you'll need to wash it more often, more on that below!

Washing your beard...

Beard products keep your hair and skin healthy so why wash away all that goodness? The answer is simple: You need to keep it clean! The best way to maintain a healthy beard is to rinse it every day and wash it properly twice a week. If you're using balms you'll want to wash it three times a week to get rid of that build up of wax.

Rinsing will get rid of any dust, food and anything else life throws at you but like shampooing you hair, you still need to clean your beard. That's where my Beard Soap comes in:

I make my soaps by hand with your beard in mind. You'll notice they feel a little softer than a regular bar of soap and that's because they contain a much higher level of "Superfats". Superfats are all the good oils and butters I use in my formula after the saponification process is complete, this is where we get a little scientific: Sodium Hydroxide is used to turn oils and butters in to soap and after the process is complete, the sodium hydroxide is gone leaving only soap. With a higher superfat level, there's extra oils and butters left as they are as well as the soap so as the soap cleans the hair and skin, it replenishes the skin with those oils and butters to leave your beard moisturised, softer and tangle free! Basically, my Beard Soap is a shampoo and conditioner in one bar.

Liquid shampoos and conditioners are no good for you beard and although you see them everywhere, you shouldn't use them! of course I won't just tell you that and leave you wondering why so bare with me as we get scientific again:

The skin produces a natural oil called Sebum. You know when you get "greasy" hair? That's the sebum pooling on the top of your head and you know it's time to wash it out with shampoo. Head hair, however, is completely different to beard hair. Once you start growing a beard you get that irritation and dry skin, that's because the skin under your beard needs more oil than the body can produce (This is where beard oils and the like come in). So if shampoo strips oil from your skin, why would you use it on your beard that needs those oils? Simple, you don't. These liquid shampoos that you see advertised for beards are nothing but hair shampoo bought in bulk, mixed with a scent to match those of the beard products in their range then put in a bottle with a label slapped on telling you it's for beards. Ok, ok, this isn't the case for every company (a good 99% though) but unless you see pictures or videos of them making the shampoo and talking about a high superfat level and why it's good for your beard, they're selling shit in a bottle!
The importance of a good beard brush...
You've seen many different types of brushes advertised for beards out there and if you're reading this, there's probably a good chance I've spoken to you about them too.

Beard brushes are just an object of vanity and they're also not just for styling your hair; They're an important grooming tool. By now you're well aware that beard care is actually skin care and and my brushes help you with that. Both my Military Brush and The Longbrush have stiff bristles that penetrate (ha) through the hair and get right down to the skin to spread the products properly.

If you're a few days in to growing your beard you won't need a brush yet as you'll be able to get right down to skin without a brush but, within a couple of weeks, you'll feel the benefits of a proper beard brush!

Why natural products are important...
Put simply, natural ingredients will help your beard and artificial ingredients will not. Have a look at any products you can buy in a supermarket or on Amazon and check the ingredients. There's a whole load of shit you can't pronounce and they're mostly preservatives and stabilisers to extend the shelf life of the product. That's great for the product but absolutely shit for your skin.

Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils - I prefer to use only essential oils but there's a lot of scents you can't get in essential oils like fruits, for example. Citrus fruits are able to produce essential oils through extraction but others can't so that's where Fragrance oils come in. To put it simply, Essential Oils (EO's) are extracted from natural sources whereas Fragrance Oils (FO's) are man made. EO's have many different benefits as they are natural but FO's do not. So FO's aren't bad for you, they just don't give you any extra benefits like the EO's do!

The Summer Raids is a scent of mine that uses FO's because the scent profile I wanted to create could not be done without them. It's also one of my most popular scents!

How often should you use Beard products?

Every. Single. Day.

Which product you use is personal preference but you should be using oils and/or butters every day. I personally only use balms when I want an extra hold for neatness like on a date night or going to a wedding etc., but I'll also use them if I'm going out and it's a bit windy. Whatever you use is completely up to you and there's no wrong answer, just keep your beard moisturised!
